Juan Diego Flórez Breaks Encore Ban at Met Opera
April 24th, 2008 at 11:09 am

Earlier this week, Peter Gelb, the Met’s general manager, asked tenor Juan Diego Flórez if he would repeat the aria “Ah! Mes Amis” from Donizetti’sLa Fille du Régiment” if the audience demanded it. Flórez said that he would, and sure enough, during Monday night’s performance, he sang the aria twice, nailing the difficult high C nine times apiece.

It was a special occasion for opera lovers; the last time the Met witnessed a solo encore was back in 1994, when Luciano Pavarotti repeated the second-act tenor aria in “Tosca.”

You can read more about the special encore and watch a video of the stunning performance at The New York Times.
